Oregon Health Sciences University is under increasing pressure to close its primate research center, including pressure from Governor Tina Kotek. We agree the center should be closed. Conditions for the monkeys are inhumane and too many of the center's experiments are cruel and could be replaced with non-animal alteratives. Thanks to Willamette Week for its continuing coverage of this topic, including its latest article here.
Oregonians have a good opportunity now to voice objections to the primate research center because OHSU is seeking approval to merge with Legacy Health. The transaction is being reviewed by the Health Care Market Oversight program of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). OHA is accepting public comments on the transaction now. To submit a public comment to OHA, include the word "OHSU" or "Legacy" in your comment and share your thoughts in one of these ways:
Email hcmo.info@oha.oregon.gov
Leave a voicemail at 503-945-6161
Fill out the public comment form
We have been told by other advocates that a decision on the transaction could be made as early as Monday, so get your comments in as soon as possible. As the simplest and easiest way to comment, we encourage a voicemail to the number above. It's always best to use your own words, but a suggested message is:
"As an Oregon resident, I respectfully ask that you represent the community and include the closure of the primate center as a condition of the merger between OHSU and Legacy Health.”
